Marysville is located in Taungurung Country, which is a part of the Murrindindi Shire. In 2009, the majority of the town and surrounding bushlands were destroyed by bushfires. Marysville got its name from Mary Steavenson, and Steavenson Falls received its name from John Steavenson; These people were involved in the construction of the town in the 1800s.
